Teaching Philosophy
—
Anyone has the ability to learn the language of music and enjoy performing. Just even a couple minutes a day will make a difference. I am of the firm belief that to make long lasting changes, small habitual changes should be made rather than large ones. Think of all the New Year’s Resolutions that are made each year only to be dropped after a few weeks. In my lessons, we often go over various practice techniques that help him/her learn in an effective way. The practice techniques extend beyond the piano and often help in learning other subjects in school. My goal is for my students to become excellent critical thinkers as well as become great musicians!
I want my students to experience a sense of accomplishment from their hard work. Each year, we have two studio recitals, one in December, and the other around May/June. In addition to these two recitals, I provide other opportunities for performances. My aim is to provide opportunities for students to interact with others.
I work with students in choosing varied repertoire that both challenges the students and provides easier sightreadable material. We learn everything from Bach and Rachmaninoff to Disney Jazz Tunes and Yanni. Every year, we participate in Elissa Milne's 40 Piece Challenge. The more music students practice and play, the better musician’s they become. Learning a piece for 3 months is great for mastery but learning multiple pieces in a 3 month span creates an open mind.
Hopefully, when students move on from piano lessons that they are able to sit down and learn a piece of music they like, participate with others in music, or even go on to college for music and become teachers themselves. But whatever they do, my goal is that they come away from piano lessons not only having a love for music and the piano, but also valuable life skills.
For the best success in my studio, I expect my students best. This involves a positive attitude, an open mind, and self discipline. Regular practice and parental support go a long way in achieving long term success.
